SOOO much has happened in the last month! We launched a new story, Super Suction Man, and StoryTots was featured in Las Vegas Home and Design Magazine! Check it out:

"When Jessica Ziegler and her husband, Gregory Casey, would tell bedtime stories to their young son, Holden, they found that he especially loved when he was the central character. So Ziegler, who is the daughter of renowned New Yorker cartoonist Jack Ziegler, decided to create a series of books in which their son could be the main character, in both name and appearance.

The result, StoryTots, allows you to select from three different books, and choose from an array of characters that look just like your child. With clever stories, whimsical illustrations and unique personalization, the books are an immediate munchkin hit."

Super Suction Man!
You asked for it!
Super Suction Man

We had a very special custom story request for a boy who LOVES vacuums! 1-3 year-olds do love vacuums, there's a reason Pottery Barn can get away with sell a $50 toy vacuum in pink AND blue.

This Month’s Project:
Make your own "Very Hungry Caterpillar"!

I love to design projects based on favorite books. It's a great way to go a step further and really get the kids into reading, especially for those of us with serious "do-ers" in the house. Spring is the perfect time to bring out this project, it invites all sorts of conversation about spring and metamorphosis, growing and changing.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric CarleYou'll need:
-A copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar
by Eric Carle
-scissors
-hole punch
-pencil (for tracing)
-white glue
-brush or Q-tip to apply glue
-tissue paper in assorted colors
-heavy or card stock paper/board
(you could use the back cover of an old coloring book)
-red construction paper
-green construction paper
-markers

Take it further:
Short pieces of yarn (bright, primary colors)
1 pipe cleaner, any color

Beforehand:
1) Cut out a large leaf shape and 1 or 2 2" circles from your heavy paper or board (or use a glass for tracing the circles). These will be used for tracing.

2) Cut up small pieces of the colored tissue paper. About 1"x1" should do.

3) Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to the kids.

The Project:
1) On a piece of the heavy paper/board, have the kids trace 3-5 separate circles with pencil.

2) Have the kids spread white glue on the circles, then apply the tissue paper to the glue. Ideally the tissue colors will cover the entire circle.
(Note: This is a great opportunity to talk about color mixing as pieces of the tissue overlap to create a 3rd color) Set aside to dry.

3) Have the kids trace the leaf shape onto a piece of green construction paper, then cut out the leaf. Help them use a hole punch to make little caterpillar nibbles in the leaf. (Note: This is a great opportunity to talk about what caterpillar really eat, leaves and plants, and where they live, on leaves/plants or underground)

4) When the tissue paper circles are relatively dry, have the kids cut out the circles. Close to circular is fine.

5) Have them trace and cut out 1 more circle from the red construction paper for the head.

6) Help them glue the circles and head onto the leave in a caterpillar shape.

7) Draw a face, legs and antenna on the caterpillar.

Going Further: If you have older or very dexterous kids, cut small pieces of yarn to glue around the outer edge of the caterpillar as fuzz. Cut a pipe cleaner and glue into place as antenna and legs. A warning: gluey fingers plus small pieces of yarn equals frustrated tears. Save that for older kids, 5 and up I'd say.

Topics for discussion: Color mixing, what caterpillar eat and where they live, metamorphosis. Jump online for some cool metamorphosis pix here: http://www.kidzone.ws/animals/monarch_butterfly.htm

Praise from customers!
We had a lot of stories go out last month and have heard back from several customers!

Dinosaur CircusPraise for Dinosaur Circus for a 6 year old boy:
"K's book is so cool. It's way more than I expected and he absolutely LOVED it.

It's fantastic to see a book that uses "big words" appropriately. You should give really pitch that on your site, because personalized books for kids his age are rare. K is very much into being "big and smart" and I was a little worried that he'd be disappointed in the book, that maybe it'd be geared to much younger kids, but you managed to make it fun and cool for both boys.

I loved that the Dinosaurs all had "fun" names, but also their real scientific names. Knowing those scientific names is a MAJOR source of pride among K and his dino-obsessed buddies.

I can't wait to get my Monkey-loving D the Monkey story for his birthday and will order from you for other big days as well! Thank you thank you thank you!!!"

Princess CrownPraise for The Princess Crown:
We just got the book in the mail, and it’s great! Ryan loved it and was super surprised to hear her name in the story. Nice job! Thanks, again, for a great book. My daughter loves it!

Coming soon to StoryTots.com!
We've received multiple requests for stories that feature two characters. Soon we will be revamping some of the stories to allow for an additional character: a twin or sibling, a cousin or a friend, to join in the fun! Hopefully we will have one or two of our stories available with 2 characters in May!

Also: We've got a new story in the works about a talented baker! Look for that in May or June.
